Dr. Jonathan RT Lakey, PhD, MSM, Senior Scientific Advisor

Dr. Lakey is recognized as a global scientific leader in transitioning promising science into clinical products to help patients. He is a renowned expert in cell isolation and preservation, particularly insulin-producing cells from the pancreas. A graduate of the University of Alberta (B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.), he further trained in Indianapolis and Seattle. His collaboration with Dr. James Shapiro led to the "Edmonton Protocol," enabling Type 1 diabetes patients to become insulin independent. Currently a Professor Emeritus at the University of California Irvine, Dr. Lakey previously directed the Clinical Islet Program and Stem Cell Laboratory. He has secured over $90 million in research grants, published over 500 scientific articles, and received numerous awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada. Co-founder of a biotech company in Canada focused on diabetes treatment, he aims for clinical trials in 2025. Dr. Lakey serves on multiple scientific advisory boards and is globally recognized for his contributions to bio-materials, stem cells, diabetes, and islet transplantation.

WHY STEM CELLS?

Stem cells are the foundation of all human development—every cell type in the body originates from them. What sets stem cells apart is their remarkable ability to self-renew through multiple cycles of cell division and to differentiate into a wide range of specialized cells, including neurons, cardiac muscle cells, liver cells, and insulin-producing beta cells.

Beyond their differentiation potential, stem cells also act as powerful signaling hubs. They secrete a variety of growth factors, cytokines, and molecular signals that promote tissue repair and regeneration. For instance, in the event of cardiac injury, stem-cell-derived progenitor cells are drawn to the damaged tissue by distress signals, where they participate in restoring function and repairing the heart.

SCEQL MSC'S

Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells derived from Wharton’s Jelly, a rich source of regenerative material within the human umbilical cord. These MSCs possess the ability to differentiate into various cell types. Widely recognized for their regenerative, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, Wharton’s Jelly-derived MSCs are a cornerstone of emerging therapies in regenerative medicine and tissue repair.

SCEQL EXOSOME MATRIX

A biologic formulation enriched with exosomes and growth factors. It is under investigation for its potential role in supporting regenerative processes such as tissue health, cellular communication, and modulation of the inflammatory environment.
