Dr. Jonathan RT Lakey, PhD, MSM, Senior Scientific Advisor
Dr. Lakey is recognized as a global scientific leader in transitioning promising science into clinical products to help patients. He is a renowned expert in cell isolation and preservation, particularly insulin-producing cells from the pancreas. A graduate of the University of Alberta (B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.), he further trained in Indianapolis and Seattle. His collaboration with Dr. James Shapiro led to the "Edmonton Protocol," enabling Type 1 diabetes patients to become insulin independent. Currently a Professor Emeritus at the University of California Irvine, Dr. Lakey previously directed the Clinical Islet Program and Stem Cell Laboratory. He has secured over $90 million in research grants, published over 500 scientific articles, and received numerous awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada. Co-founder of a biotech company in Canada focused on diabetes treatment, he aims for clinical trials in 2025. Dr. Lakey serves on multiple scientific advisory boards and is globally recognized for his contributions to bio-materials, stem cells, diabetes, and islet transplantation.
